On self-publishing: authors reveal reasons for not going traditional

It's every author's dream to be accepted by a traditional publisher...or is it? These authors reveal their own reasons for not going traditional and opting for self-publishing instead.

Why did you choose self-publishing?

Annette Leeds: "A rejection letter I received led me to spread my wings and tell my sister’s story in a way I know would make her proud."

P.G. Forte: "It is getting harder to find publishers who accept unagented submissions."

Hope Waters: "I’ve worked with publishers in the past but I decided I wanted to self publish this book. I had some alternating viewpoints that I felt a publisher would want me to change when it flowed very easily."

Jamell Crouthers:"I have been fortunate and blessed to have self-published every book I've written. When I started this journey two and a half years ago, there was never a goal of getting a book deal. I wanted to have control over every aspect of writing, editing, formatting, synopsis, book covers, promotion, marketing, pricing. I'm very hands on and I have to always be in the know of what's going on so if I'm doing it all, I'm holding myself accountable for everything."

Nancy Gray: "Even though I’ve had some connection with traditional publishers, I chose to self-publish this series for a very particular reason. R.L. Stine is one of the writer’s I respect most, but I don’t want to feel that I’m competing with him for room on a book shelf in a store. I feel like there’s room for a variety of stories involving horror from different perspectives for that audience. Since I think fantasy is flooding the middle grade market right now, those that want more horror fiction will be searching for it online. Also, self-publishing gives me more freedom with what I write. I’ve been able to oversee the entire process from who to hire to design the cover down to writing every detail about the protagonists and the villains. I’m glad that it is so easy to get a publication out in this way to make it available to middle schoolers who aren’t necessarily into fantasy but would like something fun to read that gives them a chill."

Cindy Vine: "I self-published all my books.  As an international school teacher living in random countries around the world, it is far easier to self-publish than to try and find a publisher in another country."
